Please send in a glove and a plastic bag to put the rubbish in. There will be a small amount available at school as well.
Family Mass & St Patrick's Day Family Picnic
On Sunday 22 March we will hold our school welcome function. The day will commence with a Family Mass at 9.00am in the Church followed by a fun morning of activities on our Bottom Playground. Activities, involving the whole family, will include sack races, family challenge tug-o-war, egg and spoon races and more!
Bring a packed morning tea picnic, a rug and wear green to celebrate St Patrick's Day. This event is based on an old much loved St Mary's tradition.
Family, friends and parishioners welcome.

Religious Education with Mrs Skelly
Lent
During LENT we are called to take a good hard look at ourselves… How are we living our lives? Are we really trying to be like Jesus? Do we practise… compassion, mercy, Justice, humility, forgiveness, prayerfulness?
We are asked to practise three things during Lent to get us back on track
- PRAYING – spend some quality time with God. Pray the ‘Our Father’ or ‘Hail Mary’ really thinking about the words in the prayer; have a conversation with God; reflect on the Scriptures; or simply sit in a quiet place and BE with God. Take time to just BE in God’s presence, experience His love and receive His blessing by attending Mass.
There are many websites dedicated to daily prayer and meditation. Sign up for free and receive daily emails. A couple of great ones are:
- 3 minute retreat; and Lenten Moments of Mercy loyolapress.com
- Daily prayers and Scripture; pray.com.au
Each Monday morning (9am) during Lent (beginning on Monday), there will be a whole school Lenten Prayer. All are welcome to join us for this.
- FASTING – fast from those things that keep us from being close to God and from being the best person we can be (TV, computer, overindulgence, gossiping, selfishness. I can think of a multitude of things I could fast from).
- ALMSGIVING – Reach out to help the poor - support Project Compassion; look for works of love and mercy you can do every day; go out of your comfort zone, go over and beyond to spread Jesus’ message of hope, love and joy.
Mini Vinnies
Our Year 6 students had a visit from Mini Vinnies leaders from Canberra last week. They spoke about social justice and how they could follow in Jesus’ footsteps to work for a JUST world.
Year 6 comments: “Josh and Therese made me feel very lucky for what I have. They gave us facts about homeless people and how they might become homeless”
“It was interesting because we learnt how many people are actually working with St Vinnies and how they do food drives, giving warm blankets to homeless and help people pay their bills if they need”
“Therese told us about how six Uni friends in France decided they would like to help the homeless people after seeing them on their way to Uni. They started Vinnies and it’s called a Conference when there’s a group of them working together.
“I can’t wait to start our own mini-vinnies conference here at school”
Our school Mission Leaders (Madeleine, Regan and Olivia) and other class members will be signing up to form our St Mary’s Mini Vinnies Team. Stay tuned to find out how they will be working for justice and peace and how YOU can support them.
During Lent our Mini Vinnies team will be working to answer Jesus’ call to give alms (almsgiving). Let us all help them supporting PROJECT COMPASSION through raising money for ‘the least of our brothers and sisters’.
Please support PROJECT COMPASSION by sending along ANY change you can spare for the Project Compassion box.

10 Questions to ask your child after a busy day at school.
It’s not always easy to get information from your child about how their school day was or how they really felt about how their day went. A typical after-school conversation might go a little something like this:
“How was your day?”
“Good.”
“What did you do?”
“Nothing much.”
You continue on with your afternoon or evening with no further information than that, feeling frustrated or disappointed that your child doesn’t want to talk to you about school at all.
If you’re tired of repeating this process each day with no change, it might be time to start thinking about some other questions to ask instead. Leading with a question that requires more than a simple yes or no is a great way to open a conversation and get your child talking about their day.
Try one or more of these 10 questions tomorrow and see how your child reacts:
- What was the best thing you did today?
- What was something different that happened today?
- What made you laugh?
- Who did you play with?
- What are you looking forward to about tomorrow?
- What did you learn about in music/PE/library?
- What’s something your teacher said to you today that made you think?
- If you could change one thing that happened today, what would it be?
- What part of your day went the slowest? Why?
- What games did you play at lunchtime?
Of course, if your child doesn’t want to talk about school, you should respect that too. Some children need a little space and time to relax after school before they are ready to talk about it and by giving them a little space, they might be more willing to open up later.
By asking meaningful questions and really listening to the answers you can get to know a lot about your child and how they are doing at school. It also creates a great connection between you, showing your child that you care about their wellbeing and are taking time to hear about how their day has gone.

Anxiety
Anxiety CAN look like:
- Avoidance of new things/events/situations
- Needing things to be the same
- Insisting on the same rule/routines
- Rigidity
- Social Withdrawal
- Anger
- Meltdowns
- Repetitive noises/sounds/behaviours
As parents and teacher, we need to teach our children how to self-regulate their own anxiety.
We need to teach them strategies to calm themselves, seeking a break/time out.
Sometimes we give our children visual cards because when they are anxious it can be difficult to communicate their concerns or that they need a break.
Breaks might include:
- A quiet area
- A chewy toy/treat/gum
- Listening to music
- Headphones to alleviate noise
- Reading a book
- Playing a game
- An ipad
- Movement breaks
- A wall pushup
- Deep breaths
- Counting to 10 or further
- Meditation
- Having a drink
- Carrying something heavy
- Mini-trampoline
- Exercise ball
- Star jumps
- Running/walking
- Running an errand
- Retreating to a safe place
- Sitting away from others
- Sharing a joke
- Talking to a friend
- Playing with a friend

Book Recommendation from Mrs Lowe
I am currently reading The Resilience Project, Finding Happiness Through Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness by Hugh Van Cuylenburg, a recommendation from one of our Year Six parents. I wanted to share a valuable snippet from this text. It's from Chapter Two - A Lesson in Gratitude. It is part of the story is from the eyes of six-year-old Hugh.
"Dad pitched up a juicy half-volley; he had clearly decided to give me the opportunity to win. I managed to whack the ball into a gap between two gum trees, definitely enough to allow me to run two and win the game.
'Whoa! He's got a hold of that . ..'
I scampered up the yard and turned, but as I was coming back for the second run I saw Dad had picked up the ball. His competitive nature must have kicked in, because he had a shot at the stumps from miles away, between the narrow gap in the trees. It hit! I was spectacularly run out, just one run shy of victory. Frustrated and upset, I hurled my bat hard into the wood paling fence and burst into tears.
Bill Lawry fell silent as Dad slowly walked over to where I was sobbing on the grass. He got down on his haunches, looked me in the eye and said very calmly and very clearly: 'Don't you ever behave like that. If you carry on like that again, it will be the last game of cricket we ever play together.'
I was stunned. Dad had never spoken to me in that way before. I don't think he has since. It's not as if he raised his voice or was visibly angry; there was just something profound about what he said and how he said it. I understood immediately I was being given an important life lesson.
From that moment I knew it really matters how you behave when things don't go your way, and I adjusted my attitude accordingly. Even during spirited lunchtime games of cricket at Greythorn Primary School, I made sure I never again showed disappointment or carried on like a brat if I got out or lost a game.
Though Dad didn't say it in so many words, there was more to his message than simply not being a fool: he was also saying that having the opportunity to play cricket was more than enough to celebrate. Being ablebodied, having someone to play with, having a dad, owning a bat and a ball and having somewhere to play - those were victories in life, and they counted more than the tally on the scoreboard ever could."
Ellie McCormack's Golf Results
Ellie played in the Saturday 18 hole competition in Crookwell. There was 32 people (men and women) playing , however Ellie was the only junior playing.
Overall Ellie placed first on the day with 48 points which was better then her handicap by 12 points.
What a fantastic effort Ellie!
