This week is Men's Health Week.

Men's Health Week encourages us to put men's health in the spotlight. It reminds us to give the men in our lives support & motivation to have a check-up with their doctor. 

The following are some alarming facts from the Men's Health Week Website;

"A boy born in Australia in 2010 has a life expectancy of 78.0 years while a baby girl born at the same time could expect to live to 82.3 years old.  Right from the start, boys suffer more illness, more accidents and die earlier than their female counterparts.

Men take their own lives at four times the rate of women (that's five men a day, on average).  Accidents, cancer and heart disease all account for the majority of male deaths".

Thank you!

On the first weekend in June, our Kindergarten families worked together to organise and run a street stall for our Parents and Friends Association. The stall was a huge success, raising $2019.50! Thank you to all our parents who donated wood, baked goods and other saleable items along with those who donated their valuable time. Thank you Ange Cuskelly for coordinating this successful event. 

Mrs Del Davies drew the wood raffle winners on the day with Dennis Marshall winning the first load and Denis O'Brien the second. Congratulations!

Review of Counselling and Wellbeing Services

App Transition

We are currently in the process of migrating to the SZapp for our communication messages and website. This is the app for the platform Schoolzine, which our newsletter is published through. You may have noticed a few messages come through this channel already. The Schoolzine products are supplied financially from the Catholic Education Office, whereas Skoolbag is funded solely by us. As the SZapp performs everything Skoolbag does, we have decided there is no sense in paying for this product. SZapp will allow you to do absence notes, changes of travel arrangements, changes to details, etc.

Pentecost Sunday and Holy Trinity Sunday

The Season of Easter concluded last Sunday with the celebration of Pentecost. Pentecost is the BIRTHDAY of the Church because it marks the official beginning of Jesus’ CHURCH (people of God). The Holy Spirit came upon the apostles gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem after Jesus’ death and resurrection. Jesus gives his apostles the gift of the Holy Spirit to help them ‘GO OUT’ in the world and continue the work he has begun (spreading his message about God; about peace, love, mercy, etc ).

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”(Jn 20:21). “I will send you the Helper from the Father. The Helper is the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father. (John 15:26-27)  

This coming Sunday, we celebrate Trinity Sunday – God continues to reveal Himself to us in the Holy Trinity:- FATHER(creator), SON (Jesus), and HOLY SPIRIT.  The mystery of the Trinity is difficult to put into words. It is a divine, loving relationship. St Ignatius spoke of the Trinity in terms of three notes that combine to make one musical chord – each makes an equally profound contribution to the whole.

The Father, Son and Spirit have always been ONE; they act of one accord, seeking the same good – loving us, sharing their truth and sharing all they are. We are invited to allow the gift of Father, Son and Spirit touch our lives and to find ourselves in relationship with them and one another.

As our journey through life continues, the Holy Spirit gradually reveals God’s message so that it speaks to us at appropriate times in our lives, revealing more, and guiding us to God.

Prayer is a time of allowing the gift of the Holy Trinity - Father, Son and Spirit - reach deeply into our lives. Prayer helps us to grow in love, in friendship, in understanding of the ways of God. The Spirit assists us, revealing God’s message, helping us to recognise how our way of living conforms to what God our Father asks of us and revealing how it does not. Jesus, the Son, shows us the right way through His life example.

May we grow in appreciation that we are created, redeemed and made holy by the continuing action and presence of the Holy Trinity.

CONGRATULATIONS and best of luck to Ellie McCormack for tomorrow, Friday 14 June at the DIOCESAN CROSS COUNTRY in Eastern Creek. First 6 place getters will progress to NSW PSSA on 26 July.

MACKILLOP BOYS HOCKEY

George completed his final day at the Hockey PSSA with a match against Polding. The result afforded Mackillop 6^th position overall.

“I really enjoyed playing with new friends and also enjoyed all the support from the sidelines when we were playing. We flew there on a really small plane and on the way back there was lots of turbulence and bats on the runway! I was glad to get off.

I can’t wait to try again next year”

Reading Helpers Needed                      

We still need a few more volunteers for our READING INTERVENTION programs. If you have 45 minutes available on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, we would love your help!

DDA-Disability Discrimination Act

Some of you would be familiar with the Disability Discrimination Act of 1992. As a result of this Act, the Disability Standards for Education were provided in 2005, as a framework to ensure students with a disability are able to ACCESS and PARTICIPATE in education on the same basis as everyone else.

Sometimes the disability is a diagnosed disability, sometimes it is an imputed disability. Students, who struggle with one or more areas of learning, may have an imputed disability. More simply defined a learning difficulty in reading, spelling or maths. This does not mean they always have this difficulty; it may simply take them longer to learn to read.

ADJUSTMENTS

Teachers are continually making adjustments to their learning programs to ensure students can ALL access the curriculum. An adjustment for one child often benefits many children. An adjustment might include repeating instructions, giving ‘wait’ time before an answer is expected, using visuals, cue cards, voice activated soft-ware,  modifying a task, reducing the task,  extending the time to complete a task, allowing breaks from the classroom. There are many other adjustments teachers make every day to ensure the differentiation of learning best supports ALL students.

SUPPORTING CHILDREN TO DO THEIR HOMEWORK:

1. Make it clear that it is their homework, not yours!

Help your children to understand it is their homework and their responsibility to complete it. Guide them and help them and eventually they will do it themselves. It does not have to be perfect! It is their work!

2. Don’t force them to do their homework!

Don’t make it a power struggle. Nurture your relationship, it is much more important.

3. Discuss expectations and consequences with them!

Have a calm discussion with your child at the beginning of every term. This will help give them a sense of ownership. Set the time when homework will usually happen and where. Decide together which privileges will be off-limits until homework is done. Decide on the consequences together if the homework is not done.

4. Don’t micromanage them!

It is possible for your child to do their homework on their own. As you support them in the early years, this help should become less and less. Some children are very independent and don’t need your help. They can just do it. Praise them for doing it on their own.

5. Create a distraction-free area for homework and studying!

Setting aside an area for study will help with focus. Make it an area where there is no TV or digital device distraction.

6. Acknowledge their good behaviour!

Be observant and find opportunities to praise your children for their efforts. Eg. “That’s great that you focused on your work for 20 minutes.”

7. Do your homework at the same time as them!

While your children are doing their homework, read, pay your bills, do an online study course so they see the importance of completing homework.

Homework is important, but there are other things that are even more important: Responsibility, persistence, commitment, curiosity, a love for learning. Homework is just one tool to reach these higher goals.

Kevin Naughton- Australia's Oldest Paperboy!

On a snowy Tuesday, the ABC "7.30 Report" film crew came to St Mary's to record Kevin Naughton delivering the local paper to his granddaughter Tahlia. Kevin is recorded as Australia's oldest paperboy, something his family are very proud of! Keep an eye out for the segment on the ABC.

Hockey

Some of our students have had recent success at the ACT June Long Weekend Carnival.

Congratulations to Bella Croker and Issy Galland whose team won the Under 13 Girls Division 1 competition.

Further congratulations to Nate Kemp, George Skelly, Henry Galland whose team, with assistant coach Mrs Rachael Croker, won the Under 11 Boys Divison 1.

And finally, congratulations to Ellie McCormack, Bree Hearne, Regan Picker and Sophia Galland whose team was Under 11 Girls Divison Runner's up. 

Congratulations to all of our students who participated in teams.

Soccer

Recently 3 of our students, Charlie Cramp, Paige Croker and Fynella Parsons, competed in Bathurst playing for the Southern Tablelands Football Association Under 12 Girls team in the Football NSW Under 12 Run Country Cup. The team won 1 of 3 games however all honed their skills to now head to Forbes at the end of the month to play in that Associations Tournament.
