Upcoming Events
Boorowa Touch Football and Netball Carnival
The Boorowa Touch Football and Netball Carnival will be held for ALL students in Years 2 - 6 on Friday 20 October. Please see this newsletter's School Sports section for the latest news and details.St Mary's 120th Anniversary Dinner Dance
The difficult decision was made to cancel the St Mary's 120th Anniversary Dinner Dance, scheduled for Saturday night. This decision was not made lightly, but unfortunately, due to a lack of ticket sales, we were unable to proceed with the event as planned. We apologise for any inconvenience and disappointment this may cause. We would like to thank those who purchased tickets; your support is greatly appreciated.
We remain committed to celebrating St Mary's 120th Anniversary and will do so as part of our Grandparents and Special Friends Day, scheduled for Friday 3 November.
Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2 Excursion
On Monday, 23 October, our Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two students will go to the National Zoo and Aquarium for their annual excursion. Information has been sent out via the Compass Events. Please complete the online consent form and payment ASAP or contact Belinda for assistance if required. If you need financial support with this, please let me know.
Mufti Day Fundraiser
On Wednesday, 25 October, the students may wear mufti clothing to school for a gold coin (or more) donation. This money will go towards a fantastic cause right on our doorstep. With the support of the Parish, Rob and Cathy Hunt, ex-St Mary's parents, are in the process of renovating the Convent residence to create a short-stop foster home for babies waiting placement. Currently, there is a shortage of home care positions in NSW. Cathy and Rob, along with the help from one of our mums, Tressa Mattox, have registered their charity organisation and need some assistance with some of the costs they are encountering.
On this day, the students can also buy a cupcake for $1.00 and/or sugar-free Zooper Dooper for $0.50 each.
Grandparents Day
On Friday, 3 November, we invite our parents, carers, grandparents and special friends to St Mary's to share our Grandparents Day. The day will commence with Mass at 9.30am. Following Mass, our visitors will move to the MP Hall for morning tea. After morning tea, our students will perform on stage. Given it is 120's years since the roots of St Mary's Primary School were planted, our theme is the 1900's. After assembly, visitors may have a look around our fantastic school facilities and visit classrooms.
Also, St Mary's is renowned for its incredible morning tea spreads; let us not disappoint this year. We ask families to donate a plate of food to share on this special day. Our Year 4 families, coordinated by Allison, Claire and Elise, are asked to support with the setting up and serving of morning tea.
Please mark this date on your calendar.
Operation Christmas Child
In order to have boxes packed and ready for collection to be sent overseas, items for Operation Christmas Child can kindly be returned to school by 1 November.
Below are ideas for items that can be donated. Cash donations are also welcome to assist with the postage of these boxes.
If you didn't order your photos prior to our photo day on Tuesday, please note you have 7 days to place it. Details below.

Catholic Mission- JUSTICE and SERVICE
We continue to reach out and help others to live life to the full as we try to be…
- JESUS’ FEET – walking with others in the spirit of JUSTICE
- JESUS’ HANDS – offering SERVICE to others
CATHOLIC MISSION
The Lord has told us what is good.
What he requires of us is this:
to do what is just, to show mercy,
and to live humbly with our God. (Micah 6:8)
Our Catholic school community is called to take up Jesus’ mission to reach out to the less fortunate in our world: the poor, hungry, homeless, and sick. At last Friday’s Social Justice workshops Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 students were saddened to hear about the number of people in Australia who are currently living below the poverty line. This includes 1 in 8 children. They are keen to help right this injustice any way they can.
Pope Francis says:
“Never think that you have nothing to offer, or that nobody needs you. Many people need you. Think about it! Each of you, think in your heart: many people need me.”
PRAYER –You can join us in praying for the poor and marginalised.
DONATIONS – Please help us with monetary donations if you are able. Each class
has a ‘mission basket’. Let us all help ‘fill the baskets of those whose are empty’.
WHITE ELEPHANT and LUCKY DIP STALL–Please send in items for these St Mary’s Mission Day Stalls. (Items may include things like: books, toys, kitchenware, clothes/drawing/sketching materials, purses, wallets, handbags, jewellery etc.)
They may be left in the Assistant Principal/REC office.

School Student Travel Update Term 4 2023
The attached PDF has useful information attached.
2024 school travel applications are now open
Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2024 can apply here. A new application will need to be submitted if they are applying for the first time, or if they are requesting additional travel entitlement because of new shared parental arrangement (e.g. joint custody).
Students who change address, school, campus location, have repeated a year or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of Term 4. This will ensure that schools can endorse applications, and entitlements remain valid for the start of the 2024 school year. School Opal card holders will have the changes applied to their existing card.
If a student’s distance eligibility has changed based on their grade (i.e. grade two to grade three), the system will automatically update their entitlement if they meet the new criteria. If they do not meet the new eligibility criteria, we will send them an expiry notification via email.
Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition that is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.
Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.
Students living in rural and regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at the start of the new school year from their nominated transport operator. It may come via the school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some R&R operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.
Travel from Term 1 2024
We ask that parents plan ahead and make sure their child knows which service/s to use and has a valid ticket to travel; either a School Opal card or Child/Youth Opal card (within Greater Sydney) or a School Travel Pass (outside Greater Sydney), from the start of the school year.
Applications for 2024 School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) travel open at the start of Term 4 2023, so parents/students can apply or update details early and be ready for the start of the new school year.
Most students using the Opal network will not need a new Opal card and can continue travelling on their existing card each year.
The start of the year is a busy period for local transport operators, and students travelling without a valid ticket make service planning and operations difficult.
We recognise that for some families last minute changes to school enrolments mean they may not have a School Opal card or Travel Pass for the start of term. In the Opal network, we strongly encourage these families to have their children travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.
Bus operators are flexible and understanding, particularly at the start of the school year, and will ensure students can travel safely to and from school. But to best support our operators we encourage all students to have a valid ticket, as early as possible, from the start of the school year.
