End of Term 3

As Term 3 draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support. During a period of time that has brought forth many changes to our usual routines, you have been a pillar of strength for your children. Keeping calm, consistent, resilient and positive during this time has enabled your children to continue learning in a secure environment, and for that you can be very proud.

Please be assured that even though you may not have got through all the teacher set learning, please do not worry, other very important learning has taken place during this time too. 

Please note the following school dates.

I wish all our students a restful and happy break and I look forward to seeing them, in their summer uniform, on Wednesday 6 October. Of course, if it is cold, they may continue to wear their winter uniform for the first few weeks.

The current restrictions and protocols will be in place upon return, unless restrictions change in the meantime and if this is the case you will receive further communication over the break. 

Morning Club will not be available until further notice. A friendly reminder that school supervision commences from 8.40am, please do not send your children earlier than this time. Also, be aware that the front of the school is a Bus Zone and you are unable to drop your children off in this area. Police do patrol this and have booked parents in the past. The Bus Zone finishes just before the bottom gate, so you can use this spot for this purpose. 

Public Speaking

On Thursday 7 October, we will hold our school Public Speaking Competition for selected students in Years 3-6. Each teacher has chosen 5-6 representatives for their class this week. It has been pleasing the hear that there has been many well-prepared and practised speeches and I know the staff have found it very difficult to choose their class representatives.

On Thursday the class representatives will join me in the Library to present their speech virtually to the classrooms and home participants. From there, the staff will select two from each grade to represent St Mary's at the Northern Region Public Speaking Competition, which is being hosted virtually by St Bede's on Wednesday 13 October (TBC). The students who are successful at this level will then speak at the virtual Archdiocesan Competition hosted by St Patricks, Cooma, on Tuesday 26 October.

Returning of Borrowed Devices

If you have not already done so, please ensure that any borrowed devices or technology are returned to the School Office as soon as possible before the end of term. 

May we be channels of God’s Peace during the pandemic and over the holidays

CoVID affects us all in some way or another: anxiety/frustration about a disease that we have little control over; working from home, children learning remotely, meetings cancelled, trips cancelled, visits with friends cancelled, feelings of isolation. Life at the moment all seems fast, and out-of-proportion and disorienting.

What can we do?

We can expand our hearts and our minds to see ourselves and see our families as part of a much bigger community that can have a massive impact on the lives of other people. You can help by asking yourself, “What can I and my family do to help?” “What can we offer?”. Every small act of ‘not doing' what you are not meant to do’, and ‘doing’ acts of kindness or support will add up. Your contribution may seem small, invisible, inconsequential but it makes a difference. Each and every one of your contributions to our St Mary's School community (no matter how small) has continued to be invaluable, even more so during Remote Learning.

Imagine if we could make our response to this crisis our finest hour. Imagine if a year or two from now we looked back on this and told the stories of how we continued to come together as a team not only in our school community but in our town, state, nation and across the world.

It can be our finest hour if we work together. We are all on the team. And we all need to keep shining in whatever way we can.

God of all life…

May your love and light shine through us today

in a way no mask can hide.

May our eyes dance with laughter and joy,

replacing our hidden smiles.

May our actions of care and concern

speak louder than our muffled voices ever could.

And may the generosity of our hearts

radiate who we are

and how we respond to the world around us

Canberra-Goulburn Virtual Athletics 2021

Even though our athletes did not get to actually compete at the C-G Archdiocese carnival at the AIS they have been lucky enough to have had their results used in a virtual Carnival expertly organised by Mrs Sheree Bush.

The process towards the results was as follows;

• Northern Region were lucky enough to be able to run their carnival so the students qualified through this whilst Western and Southern Region teams were put together from school carnival results.
• These results were entered into Meet Manager so the program would seed them so it was in order of placings.
• 1st, 2nd and 3rd for each event will receive ribbons for these events
• Age champions will be awarded with a medallion and runner up age champions with a certificate.
• Every participant will receive a certificate of recognition for qualifying for the virtual carnival

Anyone who placed 1st or 2nd will receive an additional certificate of achievement for being selected in the Canberra Goulburn Merit Team as well as having access to purchase any Canberra Goulburn representative gear if they wish.

All the ribbons, certificates, medallions and athletics hoodies that were ordered are packaged and will be posted today to present next Term.

All parents will receive an email of the results.

Hopefully 2022 will be a better year in sport.

Goulburn Gallery School Holiday Remote Workshops

Powerful Plastics- Online resource

Catch up with the Gallery team as they work with Council's waste department to bring you a video and PDF package to inspire a new life for your plastic waste.

Easily accessed on the Gallery Facebook page from 22 sept., the resource kicks off with an introduction with Hannah Gee to the work of Kim Williams and Lucas Ihlein in Gallery 2, whose work is all about navigating the useful and dangerous aspects of plastic. We'll then hear from Hannah Cotton who jumps in from the Goulburn Waste Management Centre to discuss the impact single use plastics have on the environment. Sally wraps it all up with some ideas to transform your own plastic items into creative pieces of art.

Inside, Outside with artist Harriet Body- Zoom workshop

Whip out some items from your home and garden to create nature wands and collages with artist Harriet Body.

You will require a device or computer with internet access, microphone, speaker and camera for this workshop. Before your workshop you will be sent a meeting link and details for the Zoom meeting. Sally will be present to introduce Harriet and administer the workshop.

Please ensure you have the below materials ready for you workshop:
- a strong stick about 30cm long
- leaves, flowers, grasses, twigs from outside
